I’m finalizing the content and agenda for my quarterly in-person Mastermind with nine women leaders this Saturday and it got me thinking about some of the things that we consistently do to self-sabotage. In coming up with these three things, I first looked in the mirror to think about the times when I’m feeling stuck and making excuses versus when I’m thriving. Then I thought about my experience working with women at every level within the organizations I’ve worked for AS WELL AS the stories (excuses) that my clients create for themselves to justify why something isn’t working.

1. Imposter Syndrome: Feeling like you’re not good enough, experienced enough or qualified enough to be at the table and ask for what you want. Here’s the thing: If you are an ambitious leader who is driven to succeed, this feeling will never go away, because it’s a natural part of the human experience. However, the upside is that the more you walk through the door of your ‘Inner Bully’, the quieter that voice becomes and your ‘Inner Bad@ss’ will show up, lead the way and allow you to forever get out of your own way.

2. Lack of key relationships. The importance of having access and relationships with people who have been where you aspire to be and have a vested interest in your success is invaluable. Not only will they show you the way, but they also will not give you a place to hide inside of your excuses. Do not let pride and wearing a mask be more important than getting the help you need to succeed. Getting to the next level NEVER happens in your comfort zone. Get comfortable with being uncomfortable and get in relationship with a mentor who can help pave the path that leads to your next level of success.

3. Being a Lone Ranger: Success doesn’t happen in a silo and unless you understand this at your core AND then do what it takes to change it, you’ll always be stuck in a self-sabotaging bubble of making things harder than they need to be. Carol Sankar reminds us that “There is a high level of mistrust, which is not highlighted during the marches and esteemed movement, of gender bias between women. The mistrust in business and the workplace is often a factor that affects the value of professional relationships and professional advocacy.” Don’t allow yourself to be apart of the very problem that you want to eradicate for yourself and others.

There are many more but in my experience, these three are pervasive and bubble up to the top of my list. It’s the very reason why I’m checking in to ensure you didn’t miss the details and 3-pay option for our upcoming conference: The Women Powered Up Experience.
